You Can Lead A Kid To A Healthy Lunch, But How Do You Get Them To Eat?
O
ne of the most thankless jobs in the world has to be the school “lunch lady.” No matter what she does she just can’t win…she makes healthy lunches and kids won’t eat them…she offers a la carte items that kids will eat and we turn into a nation of obese kids. What is a “lunch lady” supposed to do?
The U.S. Department of Agriculture is here to help her with a $2 million initiative that will allow food behavior scientists to find ways to use psychology to improve kids’ use of the federal school lunch program and fight childhood obesity, according to the Associated Press.
Is Your Kid A Bully?
Nobody wants to think that their kid could be a bully. It’s easy to make up excuses for his bad behavior…he’s just bigger than the other kids…he doesn’t know his own strength…they started it…they’re making a big deal out of nothing…the list can go on and on.
If your kid is the one slapping another kid on the playground or teasing someone on the bus then you need to stop making excuses and take action.
If you’re just not sure if your kids behavior is normal or that of a bully Parents magazine thinks you should watch for these warning signs:
Make Your Kid Bully Proof
Bullying in our schools has reached epidemic proportions. Bullying can be name calling, hitting or isolating a kid from a group. In the past it was something that most parents didn’t think about or worry about until their kids were in junior or senior high, but now bully’s can be found in every age group from pre-school to high school.
A study published in the Journal of School Health found that 19 percent of elementary students are bullied. And each day, more than 160,000 kids stay home from school because they fear being bullied, according to a survey by the National Education Association.
Is TV Harming Your Kids?
Too much time in front of the TV, computer or video game console can be psychologically damaging to your kids, according to a study published in the US Journal of Pediatrics.
The study, according to Yahoo! News, found that kids who spend hours each day watching TV or playing video games have more problems relating to peers, emotional issues, hyperactivity or conduct challenges than kids who don’t.
The study, conducted by researchers from the University of Bristol in Britain, reported that contrary to what earlier studies have indicated, the negative impact of screen time was not remedied by increasing a child’s physical activity levels.
You’d Forget Your Head If It Wasn’t Attached!
“I swear you’d forget your head if it wasn’t attached!” I think my Mom said that to me every time I forgot to bring my lunchbox home from school and, honestly, that was just about every time I took my lunch. I don’t know why I couldn’t remember to bring it home or why it seemed that I always took my lunch on Friday, so my half eaten banana and my thermos with warm chocolate milk fermented in it all weekend. I, also, don’t know why that in about the fourth grade I stopped forgetting to bring it home and I don’t think I ever forgot it again…oh the mystery of it all!
1 May Not Be The Loneliest Number
I’m the oldest of three kids and I don’t think that there was a day that went by when I was growing up that I didn’t wish I was an only child. I wanted to know the joy of watching what I wanted on TV, riding in the front seat without having to fight for it, of knowing that there would always be a pack of Pop Tarts in the box and having my Mom and Dad’s undivided attention. Just simple dreams that never came true…sigh.
Helping Your Kids Adjust To Their New School
I hate being the “new” person. I hated my first day of work…because I was the “new” employee…I almost didn’t take a tai chi class…because everyone else started the week before I did and I didn’t want to be the “new” student. So, I totally understand how kids feel when they have to go to a different school…being “new” can be hard.
It’s no wonder that starting at a new school can be the most difficult part of moving for kids. Switching schools means making new friends, getting to know new teachers and learning to navigate around a new campus.
What You Can Do To Make School Safer
All you have to do is watch the news to see that kids can sometimes face dangerous situations while at school. Whether it be a natural disaster, a predator or someone with a gun it is important to teach your kids a few things that can help protect them.

School Refusal – When Kids Say No To School
I liked school. I liked being with my friends, playing at recess, and making pictures out of macaroni in art class. Sure, there were tests to take and homework, but in the end I thought that going to school was fun.
There are kids out there who just dread going to school. For them going to school is so stressful that they may have temper tantrums or complain of symptoms like headaches, stomachaches or even chest pain to keep from going.
I Hate My Teacher!
I remember being in the fourth grade and hating my teacher. We were like oil and water. I didn’t think there was anything I could do to make her happy. I really believed that if I turned in the same exact homework as some of the other kids in my class that they would get A’s and my paper would have a big, red D- on it.
One day, I came home from school fuming mad and fighting back tears. My Dad made the mistake of asking what was wrong and I just let loose…we were all talking…but I was the only one who got yelled at…she hates me…and I HATE her and I’m never going back to school again!!!!!!!!!
